How to Travel in the Philippines: Island Hopping Guide

Most of the main tourist islands of the Philippines are well-connected by plane and ferry. Below is a breakdown of how to travel in the Philippines.

By Plane:

The Philippines have several international airports in the main tourist hubs. These are connected to several international destinations throughout Asia and the rest of the world. If you’re flying in to travel in the Philippines, then you’ll likely fly in via Manila, Palawan or Cebu.

Flying is easily the fastest and easiest way to travel in the Philippines. It’s also quite cheap, especially when choosing flights with budget airlines like Cebu Pacific.

Tip: Compare airfares on Skyscanner and CheapOAir to get the best rates on flights to get to the best place to visit in the Philippines. Set your destination and both will combine and compare the best air-fares.

By ferry and boats
Another popular way to travel within the islands of the Philippines is to take the many ferries. Islands that are quite close to each other like Cebu and Negros, you’ll find local ferry terminals making travel cheap and convenient. Otherwise, for long-distance travel over water, you can also compareRoll-on, Roll-off (RoRo) ferries. While this can sometimes work out cheaper, the distances are often very long and uncomfortable.

Travel Tips & Things to Know When Visiting the Philippines

Below is a Philippines travel guide with some more essential travel tips and things to know when traveling to the islands.

Insurance
The best travel insurance for the Philippines is either Safetywing or World Nomads. Both cover all of the activities that you’ll likely be doing including hiking, snorkeling, swimming, canyoneering and beach-hopping.

Local currency – Philippine Peso (PHP)
This is the local currency used everywhere in the Philippines. The current exchange rate is roughly 50 PHP to $1 USD. There are ATMs available in most tourist towns. Besides the main resorts, many vendors and smaller shops do not accept credit cards. So, it’s a good idea to always carry some cash when traveling to the Philippines.

Roosters
One thing you’ll notice when you go to the best places to visit in the Philippines is that there are nearly always roosters– everywhere! Cock-fighting is a big part of the culture in many of the islands and is usually a community event.

Internet
Internet speeds and accessibility will vary depending on the islands you travel to. The Philippines islands of Siargao, Palawan, and Coron are notoriously unreliable for wifi and LTE connections. The best sim card you can purchase is Globe– which has the widest network and works on most of the islands. Data is also quite cheap, at around $2USD per gigabyte.

Tours and Activities
Similarly to Indonesia, Thailand and most other South-East Asian countries, there is a barter-culture in the Philippines. Therefore you’ll need to barter for tours and activities as well. If you’d prefer not to, you can book the same tours at the local price using GetYourGuide, Viator, or Klook.

Accommodation
Accommodation varies greatly both across and within the islands of the Philippines. You’ll find 5-star luxury resorts in Cebu, Siargao, Palawan, and Coron, as well as budget guest-houses and backpacker hostels. The most-used booking website for accommodation when traveling in the Philippines is Booking.com, which always guarantees the best prices.

Languages of the Philippines Islands

Due to the scattered nature of the islands and a long indigenous and colonial history, there are now over 120 languages spoken in the country. The main language is Filipino, which is the standardized form of Tagalog. Filipinos will often refer to their language as Tagalog.

Filipinos have excellent English speaking abilit and usually speak with an Americanized pronunciation, as it is taught in school. As a result, the Philippines is one of the main countries were English-speaking nations outsource their tele-marketing and tele-support teams.
